Plant Care Guide

Whether you are a first-time plant parent or a seasoned gardener, this guide will help your plants thrive.

Sunlight

  • Bright indirect light is best for most indoor plants such as peace lily, pothos, and money plant.
  • Direct sunlight is ideal for cacti, succulents, and most fruit plants.
  • Low light plants like ZZ plant, snake plant, and Chinese evergreen can tolerate dim corners but grow slower.

Rotate your pot every 2 weeks so all sides get equal light.

Watering

The most common cause of plant damage is overwatering, not underwatering.

The finger test: Push your finger 1-2 cm into the soil. If it feels dry, water thoroughly. If still moist, wait another day.

| Plant Type | Watering Frequency | |---|---| | Succulents and Cacti | Once every 10-14 days | | Tropical indoor plants | Once every 5-7 days | | Fruit plants | Every 2-3 days in summer, weekly in winter | | Herbs | Keep soil consistently moist |

  • Always use water at room temperature.
  • Water at the base, not on leaves.
  • Ensure pots have drainage holes.

Soil & Repotting

  • Use well-draining potting mix. Add cocopeat and perlite for better aeration.
  • Repot when roots start peeking out of drainage holes or growth stalls.
  • Best time to repot is monsoon season, from June to August.

Fertilising

  • Feed during the growing season from March to September once a month.
  • Use a balanced NPK liquid fertiliser at half the recommended dose.
  • Avoid fertilising in winter.
  • For flowering plants, switch to a phosphorus-rich fertiliser during flowering.

Common Pests & Solutions

| Pest | Signs | Remedy | |---|---|---| | Mealybugs | White cottony spots | Wipe with rubbing alcohol and neem oil spray | | Spider mites | Fine webs, speckled leaves | Increase humidity and spray neem oil | | Aphids | Sticky residue, curled leaves | Spray with diluted dish soap water | | Fungus gnats | Tiny flies around soil | Let soil dry and use sticky traps |

Temperature & Humidity

  • Most tropical plants prefer 18-32 C.
  • Increase humidity with a pebble tray of water or a humidifier.
  • Keep plants away from AC vents and cold drafts.

Seasonal Care

Summer: Water frequently, shade from intense afternoon sun, fertilise monthly.

Monsoon: Reduce watering, improve drainage, watch for fungal infections.

Winter: Reduce watering frequency, stop fertilising, move tender plants indoors.

Is My Plant Dying?

| Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix | |---|---|---| | Yellow leaves | Overwatering | Let soil dry, check drainage | | Brown leaf tips | Low humidity or tap water fluoride | Use filtered water, mist leaves | | Drooping leaves | Underwatering | Water immediately | | Leggy growth | Insufficient light | Move closer to a window | | No new growth | Needs fertiliser or repotting | Feed or repot |
